Cassy YingClass of: 2025
Major: Government Hometown: Pleasanton, California Member Since: September 2021 Bio: Little Cassy had to be gently nudged into music (besides a 6-month affair with guitar). At age 5 she started piano (how original) and hated it for 7 years. But once she could choose her own pieces and play duets with friends, she finally found joy in playing music. In 5th grade, Cassy’s mother wanted her to do band, so she chose percussion because who wouldn’t want to pass Friday afternoons banging on drums? (And she mistakenly thought mallet instruments would be an easy transition from piano.) Growing up, one of her favorite father-daughter bonding activities was attending Taiko performances, and her dad's affinity for Taiko eventually rubbed off on her after watching Kodo at Berkeley. Like many members, all it took was a fateful encounter with Gaifuu (PULSE 2018) for Cassy to resolve to try out for Yamatai. Since then, she’s made many happy discoveries, from the people, to their “togetherness”, to the groovy repertoire and myriad styles, and she looks forward to making more memories in and out of the practice room. Likes: journaling, (non-academic) reading, watching sunrises after all-nighters, rainy days at the beach, driving to 2010s disney/nickelodeon albums, postminimalist music, Augustus (dorm fish), eye smiles, hair salons, warm wind, trashy TV Dislikes: people who hoard arm/leg space on planes, when people answer Qs w/ Qs, crunchy peanut butter, milk+coffee, asking for help, the patriarchy Red flags: knows obscure words but mispronounces basic words, watches everything at 4x speed, doesn't rinse after brushing teeth, don't ask her to do CPR, always emailing/texting the wrong person, probably psychoanalyzing you, baths > sleep, vegan, coffee snob |
